Naskapi Day

For generations, the Naskapi people have occupied the land of what is now northern Québec and Labrador since time immemorial. The Naskapi were nomads, living off the land and following the caribou herds on which they depended for resources. During the 1950s, the Naskapi way of life changed when most of the Naskapi people moved from Fort Chimo area to the Schefferville region. The signing of Northeastern Quebec Agreement (NEQA) in 1978 which followed The James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA), led to development of the community of Kawawachikamach which continues to grow and flourish.

Through the Jimmy Sandy Memorial School and the James Chescappio Memorial Learning Centre, the CQSB proudly honours its relationship with the Naskapi people.
