Reading Responses I
Here are the five most popular reading log responses in our class:
::::
LETTER TO A STORY CHARACTER
It's simple enough, just choose a character and write him or her a letter.
(KOALA LOU, I DO LOVE YOU)
Dear Koala Lou, Hi Koala Lou, how is it going I'm fine if you asked. I think you're really cute and even if you won second place you're still a great climber. Second place isn't that bad. I don't think you have to join the olympics to get your mama's love. She loved you the whole time. By the way is it hot over there in Australia. It's sort of chilly over here. I really do want to come visit some time. Koala Lou, I do love you!!! Love, Lisa ::::
DIARY ENTRY
The idea here is to write a diary entry one of the story characters might have written. Remember thoughts and feelings are very important in a diary.
(FROG FRIENDS)
Dear Diary, Today when I went to the school pond and found no frogs, I was pretty worried. I mean if you just rescued some frogs' lives and they ran away who knows what kind of trouble they are going to get themselves into next. So then when I got some information from my dad and the permission to look for the frogs at Farmer Jessop's pond, I started calming down just a little. Oh you don't know how much I want the frogs to be there. Mandy ::::
SPEND A DAY
The student pretends that he/she can spend a day with one of the story characters. Choosing and explaining why that character instead of another is very important in the response.
Then, of course, "What would you do together for the day?"
(FROG AND TOAD ARE FRIENDS)
I'd like to spend a day with Toad because I think he's nice and likes to play. I think he likes to play and I think he is intelligent and remembers things. I would like to help Toad to make his flowers grow and I would love to eat cookies with Toad. Alex ::::
ARTIFACTS
The student chooses 5 artifacts from the book and explains how each artifact was used.
(JUST ME AND MY DAD)
Tent -- Dad and the boy slept in it. Fishing rod -- The boy caught a fish with it. Canoe --The canoe fell in the water and sank. Wood --The Boy went to get wood for the fire. Car -- Dad drove the car to go there and back. Tommy ::::
BIO POEM
There are many variations on this poem but basically you choose a character from the story and follow these instructions:
(CALL IT COURAGE)
Brave, loyal, thin Lover of Uri and Kivi Who fears the sea god Moana Who would like to prove his courage Son of the chief, Tavana Nui Resident of Hikueru Stout Heart |
