Key Passage
(from chapter 17 page 107-108)
Mum was waiting for them in the kitchen. Her face told them something was terribly wrong before she said a word Sarah was the one to break the silence. "What's the matter? she said, her voice shrill with alarm. Mum pulled out the chair nearest to her, and sat down and reached out to them. "Your father's dead. Adrian's dead. He died at three o'clock this afternoon."

Key Passage Explanation
This passage explains to us that the mother really doesn't believe it, that her husband died because we could see it on her face and that Sarah was very worried. I chose this passage because I guessed that it would happen from what I had read earlier in the book.
