LITERACY COMPETITION

BY MELANIE DROLET

Hi! My name is Melanie Drolet. I am a third grader, 9 years old. The book my teacher read to us was Different Dragons. ("Dragons" represents the main character's fears.) The author of Different Dragons is Jean Little, this is what I learned about Jean Little: Jean Little had an extraordinary life. She was born in Taiwan to Canadian parents, Jean Little was blind from birth. Her family encouraged her to become an author and wrote excellent stories. The illustrator is Laura Fernandez. The main character is Benjamin Tucker. He is like me. He is scared of dogs, perfectly like me. I hate dogs! Benjamin was scared of dogs a long time in the story, then he fought his worst dragon and he decided to keep Gully, for his birthday. (Gully is the dog's name.) Hana is Aunt Rose's neighbour. She loves dogs. She is completely the opposite of Benjamin. Jimmy is Benjamin' big brother. Jimmy always says something not true to Ben, to scare him, of course. Jimmy is not at Aunt Rose's, because he went camping at his friend's house. The story takes place at Aunt Rose's house and outside in the backyard on the grass. Benjamin was first scared of Gully but after knowing really what he was, it was Ben's birthday present! I did not like when Benjamin heard Hana say: "Gully is mine! Gully is mine!" I didn't like it, because it's Ben's dog present. And I loved it because it was very funny! The most important part is when Benjamin really realized that he wasn't scared of Gully.
