This is the story of Juan from Guatemala, quite an eye opening realistic story for anyone who reads it. First, his dad left, then his mother left and he only had his grandmother. It turns out that his grandmother was more than enough.

The Zack Files
How I Fixed the Year 1000 Problem

Dan Greenburg
This Zack adventure is pure fun. Zack is at the library studying for his test on the year 999 when he loses his balance while leaning in too close to the computer and falls in. He finds himself in the year 999 with three students his age. They attend DSA - Dragon's Slayers Academy. Zack doesn't really believe in dragons until they run into one. Zack meets Edith the dragon, the headmaster at DSA, Mordred the Marvelous, Zelnoc the Wizard who is famous for goofing up spells, and best of all, he helps his friends foil the evil plot of Count Upsohigh, and oh yeah, makes it back home.

Different Dragons
Jean Little
A Diary Entry by Ben (the main character)
When I was in the car with my dad, I didn't really want to go to Aunt Rose's house because Jimmy said that she didn't like kids and that she was really mean but then when I got there I realized that Jimmy was lying because Aunt Rose was pretty nice. That day when Bob brought Gully over I was pretty scared but honestly I am glad that I got to know Gully more because he is a really nice dog and when me and Hana went into the attic and Gully saved us I was really proud of him. And really I did have a good time at Aunt Rose's.

McMummy
Betsy Byars
Mozie has a problem--he looks too innocent to be believed, so no one takes him seriously. His part-time job watering plants in a brilliant, eccentric professor's greenhouse takes a somewhat sinister turn when he is mysteriously attracted to a giant, humming pea pod. Although he jokingly christens the pod McMummy, Mozie quickly stops laughing when he can't get anyone to believe that he may be in real danger. With the help of a beauty queen named Valvoline and the support of his best friend, Batty, Mozie follows his instincts and his heart through a wild chase, a sad end, and finally a hopeful beginning.

Amber Brown is Feeling Blue
Paula Danziger
Fourth grader Amber can't wait for her dad to move back from Paris. But when she has to choose between spending Thanksgiving with her father in New York City or with her mom in Washington State, she "just doesn't know what to do." And to top it off, a new girl named Kelly Green joins her class -another person "with a totally colourful name"! Amber is a very likable character involved in believable conflicts.

Paula Danziger has written many wonderful Amber Brown books, another of our favourites is FOREVER AMBER BROWN.

Don't Call Me Beanhead
Susan Wojciechowski
Bernice Lorraine Sherwin-Hendricks, known as Beany, might well be a descendant of Beverly Cleary's Ramona. What's special about Beany is that she is a worrywart. She worries at home as well as at school. For example, she worries so much about an ant's crawling into a pencil sharpener that she fails a science quiz. She then worries about how to get the quiz signed by her parents.

To get your full share of Beany there are three more novels: BEANY AND THE MAGIC CRYSTAL, BEANY GOES TO CAMP, and BEANY AND THE DREADED WEDDING.
