MacLean Memorial School Crest

School crestThe links in the chain represent the interlocking partnerships so important to the succes of our school:

the students, the parents, the teachers, the school boards, the community.

The inner part of the crest is divided into three parts representing the triad of students, parents and teachers, the heart of our school. The school house gives proof that we are proud to be a small school with large dreams. The scroll with the torch carries values which are important to us. We strive to work together, to motivate ourselves and others so that we may all achieve our goals.

The beaver is our school mascot. The Latin name for the Canadian beaver is Castor canadensis. Castor refers to the beaver family and canadensis recognizes Canada as the beaver's home. One of the first yearbooks of our school was called Amik, the Algonquian word for beaver; Algonquian being the base of the language spoken by most Canadian Natives. Beavers are hard-working, peaceful animals who enjoy a social life and have a strong parental concern for their young.

MacLean Memorial School changed its name in 1978 from Chibougamau Protestant School when a contest was held and students submitted names. The students, parents and teachers then voted, and the school was named after Donald "Ducky" MacLean, a Chibougamau pioneer who was active in school and community life.
